Blog: Next New

As of right now, there is a lot of new media that is available to the public and most of it is for free. It is hard to think of new media that hasn't been invented yet. However, there can always be improvements on anything. I believe that the next big new media platform would be to communicate for businesses. Most businesses have conference calls in a large room and must use a projector and a desktop in order to do so. However, I think this would be much more useful if this could be done at a desk or just any regular station. It would make working together on a project or getting input from someone in a work area more effective and wouldn't require these conference rooms to take place. There should be a work-site application that allows workers to do so. With this, people can communicate with other people online in other branches or other companies. Small or trivial assignments can be completed much more easily as not all tasks require a serious or large room to be used.

Blog: Wiki So Far

I have done research for my research paper and even looked further into this subject to completely understand it. Social media has a huge impact on our lives and I find it important to understand how it does and to try to stay socially aware of everything. I have tried to add content based on my subject in order to help the class understand the subject as well. Instagram is a very popular application that almost everyone on social media has. Its impact on society can be seen as beneficial and detrimental. It is in fact both and this shines through when you actually relate it to your own life. I use Instagram as mainly as way to track events that I've been through, but have noticed the effects its also had on my life. I try to record a lot of things to put on my profile rather than actually be there in the moment. Experiencing things is completely different to how it was even only 10 years ago. New media has significantly impacted our lives and it is important to understand how.

Blog: P2P

File sharing is the ability to transmit files through local networks or wide area networks such as the internet. It is important to understand because this is how everything is done online nowadays. File sharing can help in ways ranging from making more efficient business practices to being able to get accurate news within seconds of an event happening. P2P file sharing is how media is shared through "peer-to-peer" networking technology. An example of this might be playing video games on LAN server when there is no internet or when a friend is in the same room as you. It could even be transferring eBooks, movies, or music. I would be able to potentially stream a movie from Netflix using this type of technology, read a book from Scribd or even download music from Spotify to help me study one day. One problem that emerges though is the "growing problem of privacy, which the American entertainment industry says accuonts for the loss of $20 billion a year in sales." With every process brought to the public also brings a way to make money out of it. Because of this, there are services that charge users for eBooks, streaming services or even video game memberships. As a result, people try to get around this and end up pirating these services in illegal ways. This article states how this has become a problem with allowing web access to users.

Blog: Privacy

In this post, discuss how the issues of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media.

With new media, we see an emergence of hordes of data that people on the internet have access to. There are many positives with new media but this is one of the negatives that everyone sees when they come into contact with social media. Our information is not private and this is what people have warned us about for the past few years. There is a politician named Jon Ossoff who is running in an election, but the other campaigns have tried to put him in a bad light where they defame him using old clips of himself that they found on social media. It is said that his new type of warfare in politics shows how much new media plays a part in our everyday lives whether we know it or not. I believe that privacy should be something that is regulated very closely. Most recently, there was the Zuckerberg incident where millions of account's information was leaked from the Facebook website. However, old politicans did not know how to handle this matter as it was a different era from how they grew up in and could not try to penalize him for this scandal. People have their everyday information readily available online and do not realize how much of an impact this can have on their lives.

Blog: Advice

I think that having such an active school requires the school to have an active social and new media presence. I think that some of the biggest systems that the school can improve upon include the cunyfirst, cunyportal and the overall social media layout. Cunyfirst is constantly down and is very hard to navigate. Creating an online application that works would be ideal to help students check their finances or statuses online on the run. Just this week, it was very hard to try to pick classes because people had theirs scheduled but the website itself was down. Cunyportal is very slow as a website and has a lot of useless content on it. A lot of professors use their own websites to teach their students or don't utilize cunyportal to what it could actually do. Social Media from Baruch is also very bad in the sense that no one is ever really kept in touch with what is going on campus. There was a moment when we had to receive the news of school being cancelled from the snow by the mayor on the news because a lot of students do not check the website or our emails since most of the information coming from there is usually spam and we tend to ignore it.

HW Creativity

New Media has changed how companies interact or even communicate with the public and other companies. The whole idea of businesses and how they operate has changed so much. However, because of this change, companies had to be ready and try to monitor themselves and others. In this article, it shows that Twitter had to use a very innovative approach to how their technology works in order to set themselves apart from other technology companies. Twitter has a lot of ways that they can change and take their company in different directions. Twitter is exceptionally good at adapting to what people want of them. At first, they didn't use technology that was very popular to the public. However, they adopted what users found trending and eventually started the hash tags and retweets that made Twitter what it is today. Creativity is important especially nowadays because almost everything has been thought up already. It is extremely hard to find a competitive advantage nowadays.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual Worlds can be used in many different ways. There are many negatives and positives associated with this new idea. I believe that virtual worlds can be used for people who wish to play video games or have different lifestyle choices. There was an episode on Black Mirror that helped me understand how virtual worlds work. Virtual worlds can be helpful and extremely revolutionary for ways that we view leisure whether it be in sports or games. However, they are still another way that people can be controlled everyday. Virtual worlds that come strictly from the mind can be extremely creative. People create their own worlds based on their own ideals or morals and can make up different timelines. It is endless and will keep on growing as the world changes around us in real life as well. I believe that one day we can be put into a virtual world where everything is almost exactly the same as real life. However, it most likely won't exist in our lifetime seeing as how some people still use television and the world of VR is still extremely new. In "I've Been in That Club, Just Not in Real Life", the author talks about how one person was able to recreate their in real life experience using a virtual world. It's almost scary to think that people would rather go into a virtual world where they believe they're safe, rather than tackle their own real life challenges. "Social Influence and the Diffusion of User-Created Content" talks about the positives and negatives of using such a technology. The idea that a virtual world would be created by a single person's mind and their own thoughts can be extremely dangerous if the person is not stable. It would lead to further instability of the mind or the individual themselves.

Blog about Twitter

I believe Twitter is very different to both a Blackboard discussion and an in-class discussion. For example, a lot of content on Twitter can be very personal and also holds up to that person's image of themselves or what their views are on certain things. For example, there was a Tennis star who had made controversial posts about racism and his views on it which weren't viewed well on the Tennis public. However, because he wasn't a major star at the time, these tweets received no recognition and people generally did not know about them. In 2018, he reached the quarterfinals of a grand slam and his PR team had him delete all these negative tweets since he was no receiving attention from the Tennis world. However, this damage had been done and his name was shamed during his short period of success. Twitter can be more damaging for one's reputation and is definitely not educational for the most part as most tweets relate to someone's opinion of a subject and not facts. A blackboard discussion is mostly used for our assignments and although we can state our own opinions, people do this mainly based off of fact and not things that impact them personally where they would be judged by anyone else than the professor most of the time. An in-class discussion is different as well because it is mostly active participation where people want to share their opinions, but it is on a certain topic provided by the professor of that class.  Students will not talk too personally during these in-class discussions as most courses at Baruch are more quantitative and based on fact rather than opinion of the public.

Blog: Social networking sites

The two other platforms that I decided to visit and use actively are Instagram and Snapchat. I have noticed that Facebook is more family-oriented where people would post pictures more about their families or just their groups of friends. I believe other people would have different impressions of Facebook based on their friends, but this was my experience. On Twitter, I noticed that people mostly talked about their opinions on subject materials whether it be political, medical, technological or even on sports. On Instagram, people liked to focus more on the Aesthetic side and more on themselves. 90% of the media I found on there were selfies or videos of themselves at events like parties or raves. I think Instagram is more a log of someone's life and that is how people perceive it to be. On Snapchat, my favorite of the four platforms, I found that I use this mostly to look at people's everyday lives since most people post on their stories and send me snaps based on something interesting that has happened in their lives. However, one thing that was different was the blatant use of advertisements as the right portion of the application was focused solely on celebrities or tabloids-like news.

Blog Social networking

One of the ways that social media has positively impacted the world is when it comes to the corporate culture. Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting talks about how social media making the recruiting process better. Linkedin is a site designated to job recruiting and allows possible candidates to put all their information on a single page for potential recruiters to see. The "dark side" to this is that potentially recruiters will adjust too much to platforms such as Linkedin and the process to scout people will get faster and faster. However, "there is no subsitute for a much older social networking tool: the telephone." I believe that Linkedin will continue to become easier and more accessible to the public and recruiters worldwide.

Obama himself talked about how social media could be used as a platform to help inform the public about particular matters. This article says that "there's every reason to believe that he will use the network not just to campaign, but to govern." As a result, social media has helped out Obama with not only his campaign, but his presidency as well. Informing millions and millions of people with just the click of a button is important in spreading awareness and giving information out. However, the "dark side" of this is that this can be used to sway people who do not know the true story or outcome of a situation. If a person favors the party, they will believe that person instead of what might actually have happened. This will and has evolved into what is currently known as "fake news" amongst the media. People will sway to a certain opinion because it benefits their own and will believe in it even if the news itself is fake.

BLOG: Blog v Wiki

Blogs and Wikis are two different ways that information is spread. Wikis are collections of information that can be edited by people who see the content and wish to have their own input on whatever subject material is present. Blogs, on the other hand, are more private and has material that is created by content creator of that blog or administrators that have access toe the blog.

I believe that a blog is more to express one's own opinions. For example, in Pentagon Keeps Wary Watch as Troops Blog, the article states that there are two cultures clashing between the use of social media and a more modernized environment compared to the traditional military values and beliefs. However, limiting one's usage of the Internet, even in the military, is denying their right to express their opinion and interaction with others to share their beliefs. It has even been so that in the past people had to show and review their posts before sending them out, especially on blogs. This limits the usage and whole idea of the blog being a way of expressing someone's personal opinion. The military limited the use of blogs because they did not want people to express any extreme beliefs or posts that were inappropriate.

Wikis are more community-based and, as a result, will not have anything too extreme. It is a collaborative effort by multiple parties and open to a lot of people to view and help edit. In What Motivates Wikipedians, the author tries to see why people who post on Wikipedia continue to put effort into this activity. All of these included values, social, understanding, career, protective and enhancement. Most people wanted to contribute because it was fun for them to do so and that it would help spread knowledge compared to if they wanted to for career or protective reasons. Being in a community is mainly about finding your place and people who want to help spread knowledge or even learn more about things that they are interested in will find that here.

Instagram Impact on Society's Values

Instagram has had a significant impact on people's values since it has come out. People use Instagram as a platform to express their lives and gain followers to either advertise or use for personal purposes. However, people mainly only post their positive and happier moments going on in their lives at that moment. Because of this, people tend to associate and compare their own lives to everyone else's happy moments. It is a known factor that excessive social media usage has led to poor mental growth and state in younger generations. One of the facts that plays a key role in this is Instagram.
