Blog: P2P

File sharing is the ability to transmit files through local networks or wide area networks such as the internet. It is important to understand because this is how everything is done online nowadays. File sharing can help in ways ranging from making more efficient business practices to being able to get accurate news within seconds of an event happening. P2P file sharing is how media is shared through "peer-to-peer" networking technology. An example of this might be playing video games on LAN server when there is no internet or when a friend is in the same room as you. It could even be transferring eBooks, movies, or music. I would be able to potentially stream a movie from Netflix using this type of technology, read a book from Scribd or even download music from Spotify to help me study one day. One problem that emerges though is the "growing problem of privacy, which the American entertainment industry says accuonts for the loss of $20 billion a year in sales." With every process brought to the public also brings a way to make money out of it. Because of this, there are services that charge users for eBooks, streaming services or even video game memberships. As a result, people try to get around this and end up pirating these services in illegal ways. This article states how this has become a problem with allowing web access to users.
